“Negativ White 2″ ist Papiros zweite Platte in Zusammenarbeit mit Markus Stähli von Roy & the Devil’s Motorcycle. Ähnlich wie schon bei “Rev” (TREE028) handelt es sich um eine Live-Aufnahme, welche bei einer Probe für ein Konzert entstanden ist – sie wurden damals für einen Rockabilly [sic!] Abend gebucht. Das Instrumentarium ist verhältnismässig minimal: Ein Drumcomputer, ein Synthesizer und synthetisches Stöhnen (ein Resultat aus der Paarung eines VCS3 mit einem Formant-Filter), zusammen zu einem dubbigen Etwas geflochten. Die Synthesizer zischen und fiepen, wie es in einem Tronesken Urwald, als digital noch analog war, vielleicht anzutreffen gewesen wäre. “Negativ White 2″ ist etwas für DJs, die gerne gefragt werden was zum Teufel sie eben gespielt haben. Bei richtiger Verwendung verleiht diese Platte jedem gesellschaftlichen Anlass neuen Gesprächsstoff.

“Negativ White 2″ is Papiro’s second output in cooperation with Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle’s Markus Stähli. Similar to “Rev” (TREE028) this is a live-recording, which was done during a rehearsal for a gig – they were booked for a Rockabilly Night [sic!]. The instruments are kept rather minimal: a drum machine, a synthesizer and synthetical moaning (as a result of pairing a VCS3 with a Formant Filter) are woven into a dubby something. The synthesizers squeak and hiss as one might like to imagine to find in a Tronesque jungle, like back when digital was still analogue. “Negativ White 2″ is a record for DJs that enjoy answering the question what the hell they’ve just played. Applied correctly this record will lend any social event new topics of conversation.

Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle veröffentlichen mit A Tree in a Field Records eine Serie von 7″ Vinyl Singles. Die Dimension der Serie ist nicht absehbar, sie wird sich über die nächsten Monate stetig ausdehnen. TREE034 ist Nr 2 der Serie. Nr 1 ist out of Space verschollen, die, die trotzdem eine zu ihrem Besitz zählen können, dürfen sich als glücklich schätzen. Die Serie fängt also mit Nr 2 an. Seite A mit einem Cover von Robert Wilkinson, Seite B mit einem Original von Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle, das wiederum in eine Variation von Robert Wilkinson’s Getaway Blues mündet.

The dimensions of it are unclear at present, it will expand over the coming months. TREE034 is number two of the series. Number one is already lost in outer space. Those who are able to claim ownership of one can count themselves as lucky. Hence this series starts with number two. Side A holds a cover version of the Robert Wilkinson piece Getaway Blues, side B sports a Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle original that again weaves into another version of before mentioned Getaway Blues.

In the past they’ve been labelled as the slowest working band. Truth is: Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle know no chronology. And should they against all odds do so they would follow their own: this is confirmed by the fact that they’ve released only three albums over the last twenty years. The gaps in-between by no means are filled with a vacuum but with touring and walks in the woods. The band around “the three brothers” maintains a steady reputation of being rather dissolute. Gigs not rarely hit the three hour mark, song structures are free and meandering. Their concerts are cult.

Fai Baba – Shine A Light

Fai Baba fliegt im Winter 10/11 nach New York. Nicht um sich von den Lichtern die die Welt bedeuten blenden zu lassen, sondern sie gleich auf sich zu richten: kurzerhand stellt er eine Band zusammen, bestehend aus Mitgliedern von Viva L’American Death Ray Music, die er Wochen zuvor in Zürich kennenlernt. Als Fai Baba and the Creamy Close-Ups spielen sie Konzerte und nehmen beiläufig zwei Songs auf: Fai Baba’s dringliche Interpretation vom Velvet Underground Klassiker «Run Run Run» und das bluesige Original «Shine a Light». Shine a Light findet den Weg zurück nach Zürich, Run Run Run jedoch bleibt im Vierspur Gerät von Viva L’ American Death Ray Music hängen. Dieser wird kurzerhand noch mal mit Frank Motier (Drums) und Lukas Müller (Bass) in Zürich auf Kassette gebannt.
Die 7″ ist auf 523 handnummerierte Exemplare limitiert. Das Cover ist im Linoldruck Verfahren gedruckt.

It’s winter 10/11 when Fai Baba flies to New York. Without further ado he gathers a band around him consisting of members of Viva L’American Death Ray Music, whom he met weeks before in Zürich, Switzerland. They play a couple of gigs under the moniker of Fai Baba and the Creamy Close-Ups and casually record two songs: Fai Baba’s exigent interpretation of Velvet Underground’s «Run Run Run» and the bluesey original «Shine a Light». Shine a Light finds its way back to Zürich, Run Run Run though happens to be left behind and remains lost in the depths of Viva L’American Death Ray Music’s four track. Hence the song is hastely re-recorded in Zürich with the assistance of Frank Motier (Drums) and Lukas Müller (Bass) who both have already contributed to Fai Baba’s debut «Love Sikk».
This 7″ is hand numbered and limited to 523 copies. The cover was printed using linocut technique.

Die Welttraumforscher ist eines der rätselhaftesten Musikprojekte der Schweiz, dessen Gesamtwerk nicht nur über 30 Tonträger, sondern auch Filme, Erzählungen und unzählige Illustrationen umfasst. Dies sind gleichzeitig die einzigen Dokumente welche die Existenz der Welttraumforscher belegen. Kleine Wesen mit grossen freundlichen Augen, die eher wie Schlossgespenster als wie Wissenschaftler aussehen, gezeichnet mit kindlich anmutender Naivität und obsessiver Sorgfalt. In ihrem Universum erleben nebst den Forschern auch Figuren wie der Mondpapst, Kip Eulenmeister und Leguan Rätselmann wunderliche Abenteuer, in einer Mischung aus Science-Fiction, Metaphysik und Dadaismus. «Wir arbeiten für die nächste Welt» sagen die Welttraumforscher und erklären somit, warum wir – hier und jetzt – nicht immer alles davon verstehen können und müssen.
Der Urheber hinter dieser Phantomband taucht jeweils nur im Kleingedruckten auf: «Texte, Musik und Zeichnungen von Christian Pfluger für die Welttraumforscher». Ähnlich wie bei den musikalisch verwandten Residents, arbeitet Pfluger im Hintergrund zugunsten einer Legendenbildung, mit dem Unterschied, dass er sich an Konzerten weder versteckt noch verkleidet, sondern bloss selten auftritt.
Diese geheimnisvolle Aura, die an Esoterik grenzende Mystik und die fast ausschliesslich deutschen Texte sind mögliche Erklärungen für das Nischendasein der Welttraumforscher. In Musikerkreisen hingegen geniessen sie einen Kultstatus. Zu ihren Bewunderern gehören Mouse on Mars, Neoangin, Harald «Sack» Ziegler u.a., welche 1999 auf Felix Kubins Gagarin Label eine Remix-LP veröffentlichten, aber auch Dieter Meier (Yello) sowie der deutsche Astronaut Hans-Joachim Roloff.

Die Welttraumforscher is one of Switzerland’s most enigmatic musical projects, with a catalog that not only spans more than 30 albums, but also films, stories and countless illustrations. These documents are the only proof that “Die Welttraumforscher” actually exist. Small creatures with big, gentle eyes, more reminiscent of friendly ghosts than of scientists (Forscher), are depicted with childlike innocence and painstaking attention to detail. Their universe also includes such characters as the “Moon Pope”, Kip Eulenmeister and Leguan Rätselmann. Together, they experience weird adventures with a touch of science fiction, metaphysics and dadaism. As Die Welttraumforscher themselves put it: “We are working for the next world”. No wonder that those of us stuck in the here and now are not always able to make sense of it.
The man behind this phantom band is only mentioned in the small print: “Lyrics, music and illustrations by Christian Pfluger for Die Welttraum-forscher”. Not unlike musical kindred spirits The Residents, Pfluger remains in the shadows, creating a mystique. However, instead of concealing or disguising himself at shows, he just very rarely plays live at all.
This veil of mystery, the borderline-esoteric mysticism, plus the fact that the lyrics are almost exclusively in German, might explain to some degree why Die Welttraumforscher have always led a niche existence.
Among musicians, however, they have already gained cult status. Mouse on Mars, Neoangin, and Harald «Sack» Ziegler are just a few known admirers. Together with other musicians, they released a remix LP on Felix Kubins Gagarin label in 1999. Other well-known aficionados are Dieter Meier (Yello) and German astronaut Hans-Joachim Roloff.

Pünktlich zu ihrem 30. Geburtstag wird die Debut-Kassette der Welttraumforscher «Herzschlag Erde» wieder veröffentlicht. In einer Zusammenarbeit bringen die Label Planam und A Tree in a Field eine limitierte Vinyl-Edition heraus, ergänzt durch eine grossformatige 20-seitige Beilage und dem bisher unveröffentlichten Nachfolger «Verdunkelt die Sinne».
Auf «Herzschlag Erde» wird ein musikalischer und künstlerischer Kurs skizziert, welcher sich in den folgenden 30 Jahren kaum verändern sollte. Das eben erst erschwinglich gewordene Heimstudio in Form einer bescheidenen 2-Spur Bandmaschine erlaubte dank Ping-Pong-Verfahren im Alleingang Musik aufzunehmen – «wir arbeiten mit dem, was wir haben, und nicht mit dem, was wir gerne hätten». Die technischen Einschränkungen werden durch einen unerschöpflichen Einfallsreichtum kompensiert, das Endresultat bleibt jedoch stets leicht und verführerisch. Das erste Stück «Der Traum der Welt» dient gleichzeitig als Manifest: «… sie kommen zu uns, die Welttraumforscher, Musik vom Endpunkt der Gedanken, weder-noch-Geräusche und Tanzfallen.»

Right on time for its 30th anniversary, Herzschlag Erde, cassette debut album of Die Welttraumforscher, is being re-released in a collaborative effort between the labels Planam and A Tree In A Field. The new, limited vinyl edition includes a large-format, 20-page booklet as well as the previously unreleased follow-up album, Verdunkelt die Sinne.
Herzschlag Erde sets a musical and artistic course that has remained largely unchanged in the following 30 years. New, affordable technology such as a simple 2-track tape recorder capable of ping-pong overdubbing made it possible to record music alone; “We work with what we have, not with what we’d like to have.” Technological constraints are compensated by an unbounded imagination, yet the final result remains playful and intriguing. The opening track, Traum der Welt (Dream of the World), is also a manifesto of sorts: “…they are [...] coming to us. Die Welttraumforscher, music from the far end of our thoughts, Neither-Nor sounds, and dance ambushes.”

Flimmer

Mit nur zwei Bässen und Schlagzeug produzieren Flimmer eine Musik, die überreich ist an Brüchen. Ja, Brüche sind hier konstituierendes Element. Flimmer zitieren alle nur erdenklichen Spielarten herbei, ohne sich jemals festzulegen. Ein Break jagt den nächsten. Eruptiver Grindcore inklusive Schrei-Gesang.
Flimmer sind aus den Aschen der Alien-Punk-Band Little Green Scientists gestiegen. Zeitweise waren sie als Quintett unterwegs, in der Zwischenzeit sind sie aber wieder auf Trio Grösse geschrumpft, was ihrer musikalischen Überzeugungskraft keineswegs geschadet hat.

Using just two basses and a drum kit, Flimmer produce music jam packed with breaks. Indeed, breaks are certainly a constituent element here. Flimmer draw on every variety of metal imaginable, without ever settling on one style. One break hunts the next. It’s eruptive trash-metal complete with shouted-singing.
Flimmer rose from the ashes of Alien-Punk-Band Little Green Scientists. At times they worked as a quintett but recently have shrunk to a trio. Which has not at all lessened their musical power of persuasion.

Fai Baba

Fai Baba wurde am 5. Mai 1985 in diese Welt geboren. Mit 22 Jahren, nach einer spirituellen Reise durch Indien, stand er das erste Mal in dieser Form und Gestalt auf einer Zürcher Bühne.
Seit seinem ersten Lebenszeichen, in Form einer LoFi Dogma Session, aufgenommen im April 2008, hat sich Fai Baba mindestens zum Geheimtipp gemausert.
Unzählige Soloauftritte in Hinterzimmern und Whiskybars später, und das bevor sein Debut überhaupt veröffentlich ist, wird er an das Paléo-Festival Nyon eingeladen, sowie auf die Bühne des Schützenareals, im Rahmen des Stadtsommer Festivals. Die vereinte Prominenz der Zürcher Indieszene goutiert seinen Auftritt.
Die Solozeiten sind erst mal passé, es unterstützt am Bass Lukas Müller, seines Zeichens Mr. Soul und am Schlagzeug Frank Mottier von Demolition Blues, bei letzterer Fabian Sigmund alias Fai Baba, wenn er nicht selber unterwegs ist, die Gitarre spielt.

Born to this world on May 5 of the year 1985, at the age of 22 after a spiritual journey to India, he entered the stages of Zurich for the first time under the moniker of Fai Baba. Since his first sign of life, a session recorded for the LoFi Dogma series (www.lofidogma.com) in April 2008, Fai Baba has become an insider tip at the least.
Numerous gigs in small bars later, and before even releasing his debut, he’s invited do play Paléo Festival in Nyon and onto the stage of the Schützenareal in the course of the Stadtsommer Festival in Zurich. The Indie celebrities of the town unitedly give him credit.
He’s no more to be found performing solo onstage, but since recently has gotten support by Lukas Müller for his part mastermind of Mr. Soul on bass and Frank Motter of Demolition Blues on the drums. Demolition Blues also being the band where Fai Baba plays the guitar when he’s not performing his own songs.

Mir

Es gibt bestimmt ein Duzend Bands da draussen die sich Mir nennen, aber wahrscheinlich ist keine so weit von der ursprünglichen Bedeutung des Wortes (mir=russ. Frieden, Stille) entfernt wie diese. Die Relation liegt, wenn überhaupt, höchstens in der Ähnlichkeit ihrer Musik mit dem Klang einer herabstürzenden sovietischen Raumstation.
Das Trio mit dem charaktervollen Musikgeschmack hat schon vor Mir ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Daniel Buess ist Perkussionist und Gründungsmitglied von Ensemble Phoenix, eines rennomierten Ensembles für Zeitgenössische Musik und hat in einer späteren Version der legendären Noise Pionieren 16-17 Schlagzeug gespielt. Papiro und Michael Zaugg haben ihrerseits ihren Ruf als eher radikale Drone Musiker vorweg zu schicken.

There must be at least a dozen Bands named “Mir” out there, but probably none of them is farther away from the original meaning of the word (mir= russ. peace, tranquillity) than this one. The relation, if any, could be found in the similarity of their music with the sound of a deorbiting soviet spacestation.
The threesome with the distinguished taste was already well acquainted with experimental forms of bruitage before forming this entity. Daniel Buess (dr/electronics) is percussionist and founder member of Ensemble Phoenix, a renowned ensemble for contemporary music, and has also been drumming in a latter version of legendary noise pioneers 16-17 (EP Mechanophobia). Papiro (g/bg) and Michael Zaugg (organ/synthesizer) forged their own bad reputation as some of the more radical drone musicians around.

Der frühere Geiger in zweitklassigen Orchestern, Papiro, hat seither in vielen Bands gespielt. Von Garage Punk bis zu Electronica und darüber hinaus reichend, hat er jedes Instrument in greifweite gespielt. Während seine Studioarbeiten meistens in kurzen instrumental Stücken münden, sind die Live Auftritte in atmosphärischer Minimal-Musik und Drones gehalten. Das manchmal in betäubender Lautstärke wie z.B. während der “organ transplants” Performance für 17 Keyboards mit Begleitautomatik.
An seinen Konzerten ist jedes Instrument live gespielt ohne dass vorgängig Sequenzen gesampelt oder programmiert wurde.

Papiro is a graphic designer, violin player, record collector and electronic music maker with a particular affinity for machines from the pre-programmable era, such as the VCS3 Synthesizer. Early concerts under his own name sometimes consisted of a single chord, held for 30 minutes at high volume. In the studio, meanwhile, he enjoyed endless modular patching and the virtues of overdubbing, which resulted in the Sci-Fi Easy Listening album Avventure Lontane (2006). Defying categorisation again, the follow-up Rev (2010) moved into the sonic territories of New Age and Ambient, while at the same clearly differentiating itself from these genres by its restless and disturbing mood.
Papiro’s live appearances can be called unique: in fact, he very rarely performs the same set twice. Another good reason why they shouldn’t be missed.
